What is The Herbal Healing Deck?

The Herbal Healing Deck is a divination system that will help you get to know healing plants like good friends. You’ll learn about the plants’ medicinal uses and metaphysical properties, plus interesting folklore tales and plant myths. We dive deeply into each plant’s unique personality, exploring plant spirit archetypes and uncovering layers of truth, healing, and meaning that these plants offer.

The Herbal Healing Deck is not a Tarot deck, but an oracle deck of 48 cards divided into four suits: Roots, Herbs, Flowers, and Trees. Each card features a visionary herbal depiction that will speak to you on a symbolic level to convey the true essence of the plant. This deck will get you in touch with the plant spirits, who are waiting to connect with you and help with your personal healing journey.

While cultivating relationships with all plants is beneficial, this deck focuses on the ones used for herbal healing. Why? Medicinal plants carry an amplified healing vibration that seems to be more readily available for human contact. Our connection to these plants is in our very DNA. Our ancestors knew how to work with healing plants; they knew how to commune with them. It is time for us to reclaim this sacred relationship for the benefit of both humankind and the Earth. The Herbal Healing Deck was created as a means of facilitating communication between us and the plant world.

Learning to connect with plants on a spiritual level is a valuable practice that can impact our lives in many ways. By restoring the lines of communication established by our ancestors, we heal ourselves and develop a deeper respect for nature as a whole. Our green allies can accelerate the personal growth process, provide valuable lessons, and bestow much-needed healing energy.

Creating The Herbal Healing Deck

Now that you know more about The Herbal Healing Deck, the author would like to share her personal story of how it was conceived and developed. Here is Sarah’s story:

I grew up in the woods and rolling hills of southern Indiana--a region I now affectionately refer to as “The Shire.” As a child, I adored playing outside amongst the flora, fauna, and nature spirits. I recall making magical potions with rainwater and plants on a regular basis.

My mom had a wide variety of oracle decks, along with runes, pendulums, and various other divination methods. She kept these tools in one little room in the corner of our old farm house. As a little girl, one of my favorite things was to sit in this room, also full of books and crystals, and pick cards with my mom. She also treated me to flower essence therapy as a child, eventually teaching me how to create my own blends. She showed me a method of choosing flower essences using a pendulum--this was the very first connection I made between herbal healing and divination.

*~*~*~*

My interest in plants was renewed in my early twenties. In college, I took a class on wildflowers and wild edibles to learn the basics of field identification and harvesting plants from the wild. As a Taurus, I loved being in nature, getting my hands dirty, and learning practical uses for the things in my environment. I began vegetable gardening and soon found myself growing a variety of kitchen herbs as well. I was intrigued to learn that most of the culinary herbs I was growing also had medicinal properties. I was hooked.

Thus began years of self-study, during which I read many books, cultivated and wildcrafted plants, and created herbal medicines for myself, my friends, and my family. Eventually, I started a line of herbal products that included salves, dried herbs, tinctures, teas, smudge sticks, oils, and balms.

In 2010, I completed an herbalism internship at Herb Pharm, which was a life-changing experience for me. Being around other herbalists immersed in vast fields of medicinal plants carried with it an element of magic. It was at Herb Pharm that I first came into relationship with plant spirits. Or rather, it was my first conscious connection with plant spirits, as I’m sure they have been working with me all my life. I had signed up for the internship to learn the nuts and bolts of herbalism. Little did I know that the plants had other plans for me!

Gradually, I became aware of plants as conscious beings capable of guiding and healing us on multiple levels. Plant spirit healing, also called plant spirit medicine--or, as I like to call it, plant spirit magic--is the practice of working with plants on the level of spirit and consciousness for guidance and healing. It is a more shamanic approach to herbal medicine, one that views the plants as spiritual guides rather than only physical materials with healing compounds.

Once this awareness opened up for me, I began having some intense healing experiences with plant spirits. One such experience involved a series of synchronistic events that transpired with the plant Ceanothus americanus, Red Root. You can read this story in The Herbal Healing Deck guidebook. It was during these years of accelerated discovery that the seeds for The Herbal Healing Deck began to take root in my mind.

Later, I started writing natural wellness and metaphysical articles for various online and print publications. I wrote often on the topic of medicinal plants and also began teaching herbalism workshops. The joy it brought me to open others up to the wonders of the herbal medicine was the final push I needed to create The Herbal Healing Deck.

Meanwhile, the more attention I gave to the plant spirits in my daily life, the more wisdom they gave me in return. I used various methods to get in touch with the plant spirit realm, from meditation and shamanic journeying to gardening and taking long, contemplative walks through the woods. I experienced more and more synchronicities and healings surrounding plant medicine, and they allowed me into their world enough to catch glimpses of their personalities, themes, and archetypes. There were many magical experiences that led to the creation of this deck, and I hope to share them with you in the weeks and months to come on our blog.

*~*~*~*

Crucial to the creation of The Herbal Healing Deck has been my friendship with the deck’s visionary illustrator, Ashley Verkamp. As fate would have it, Ashley built a strawbale home on a piece of land in The Shire, only a few miles away from where I grew up. As fellow Taureans who share a love of gardening and a deep reverence for nature, we became fast friends.

Ashley has been my spiritual study-buddy for years now, and her contribution to this deck is invaluable. Our friendship and collaboration is one thing that sets our deck apart from other oracle decks. Many authors work with illustrators remotely, or have a deck full of illustrations from various artists. There is nothing wrong with that, but I do feel that our close collaboration has added to the authenticity, depth, and sheer magic of The Herbal Healing Deck.

For all of the 48 card illustrations, Ashley completed a shamanic journey to visit with each and every plant spirit. During this process, she received a combination of visions, messages, and healing experiences that guided her artwork. She added layers of meaning to the messages I’d received from the plants, and many times I felt compelled to add to the text based upon her experiences with the plant spirits.

Ashley’s journeys were eerily accurate, often echoing elements of my own plant spirit experiences that I hadn’t even shared with her. Sometimes, she would receive information about the plant that nether of us knew, but we would be able to verify later with research. I would sit and read her notes on the latest plant spirit journey, and my jaw would fall open in wonder at the information she was able to pick up on. If you’re curious about what Ashley’s shamanic journeys entailed, you can read about her experience with the Black Cohosh spirit in The Herbal Healing Deck guidebook.

As Ashley created the illustrations, I would print them out on photo paper and lay them on my altar and around the house. Let me tell you--these illustrations have a power and a life of their own! They are coded to contain healing energy, and I myself have had messages and healings come from the images themselves. Even if you only worked with the cards and never opened the book, you would still reap healing benefits from this deck. (And believe me--as the book’s writer, it pains me to say that!)

The creation of this deck has brought both of us, author and illustrator, many amazing experiences. In addition to the mystical moments and mind-blowing synchronicities, both of us have felt deep healing while working with these plants. After all, there is a reason why it’s called The Herbal Healing Deck. Plant spirit magic is real, and it is palpable for those who open themselves to it. We have the sincere hope that as you work with this deck, you too will experience all of the joyous synchronicity and deep healing that these plant spirits have to offer.
